IZMIR  CITY TOUR -IZMIR SEIGHTSEEING TOUR (Half Day)

*Your Izmir guide will meet you at Izmir Port or at your hotel in Izmir. The guide will hold up a sign with your name on it.
*Izmir, also once called Smyrna, is Turkey's third most populour city and the countries largest port after Istanbul. It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. The total population of this greater urban region in 2007 was 3,175,133. The term (Old Smyrna) is used to describe the Greek city-state of the classical era located at the urban settlement in Tepekule, Bayrakli, to make a distinction with Smyrna re-built later on the slopes of Pagos (present-day Kadifekale). Greek settlement in Old Smyrna is attested by the presence of pottery dating from about 1000 BC onwards and the most ancient ruins preserved to our day date back to 725-700 BC. Smyrna was the second city to receive a letter from the apostle John in the book of Revelation.  Acts 19:10 suggests that the church there was founded during Paul s third missionary journey.
*Firstly, you will drive to the Agora.  This 2nd century A.D. agora, midway between the acropolis and the harbour, was partially excavated by German and Turkish archaeologists from 1932-1941.  Porticoes lined the north and west sides of the agora, and an altar to Zeus sat in the center. It was used for political gatherings and elections by the representatives of the Roman government, but was also the main commercial area of the city. Your local guide will show you the only two-storey agora known to scholars: The first floor was reserved for wholesale trade, with workshops, cooling cisterns and warehouses for goods, while the second floor was designed for political meetings and retail trade.
*After the visit of the Agora, you will drive to Izmir Archaeological Museum. The museum exhibits an impressive collection of ancient and Roman artifacts recovered from area excavations, including Bergama, Iasos, Bayrakli (Izmir s original settlement), and Izmir s Agora. Then visit Ethnographical Museum, which is next to the Archaeological Museum. In this museum there are cultural objects from daily social life of Anatolian people housed in a 19th century three-storey Neoclassical building which was used as a hospital and seniors day care in the late 1800's. It was opened as a museum in 1984 after moving artifacts here from Ataturk's Mansion. These artifacts are displayed in the first two floors, 3rd floor is reserved for storage, laboratory, photographic studio and administrative offices. The museum displays many models of extinct or near extinct handicrafts due to the industrialization, such as; tinsmith, clog making, pottery, blue bead making, wood imprinting, carpet weaving, rope making, feltsmithery and saddlery.
*Afterwards, you drive back to Izmir Port or your hotel in Izmir.

Everyone wants to visit this exceptional site !
Ephesus was of one of the most illustrious and important cities of ancient Greece and Rome. Once the capital of Rome's Province of Asia, second only to Alexandria, and with a population of 250,000 it was famed for its beauty, wealth and decadence as well as its fabulous Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
As aptly put by "Let's Go Turkey":
"Short, fiery and intense, Ephesus' history has all the makings of an ancient tragedy. Out of devotion to its patron goddess Artemis, it stayed close to her colossal temple rather than sidestep certain death as its harbour steadily filled with silt. Despite desperate attempts to battle the Cayster River's indefatiguable silt-depositing tyranny, the recession of the sea had sealed the city's fate by the 6th Century. The harbour deteriorated into a marshy morass, which eventually became infested with with malaria-carrying mosquitoes, triggering a massive epidemic that resulted in nearly 200,000 deaths ...."
An important site of early Christianity, it is mentioned in the New Testament of the Christian Bible (Acts 19v23* and the Epistle to the Ephesians) and was the site of the third Ecumenical Council that determined the status of Mary as the Mother of God in 431 AD and found Bishop Nestoridas a heretic for disagreeing. St. Paul lived there for 3 years from 50 AD. Jesus' mother Mary and Apostle John are other famous former citizens.
90% of people need 2 - 4 hours to see Ephesus; enthusiasts of classics, archeology and theology will want much more !
Private Guides, Tour Groups and "DIY" Guide Books are all available and are all good in their own way, depending on your budget and what you want.
